Just Right Reader to Donate 5 Million Books to Districts Nationwide to Keep Students Reading Over Winter Break

To keep students reading over the upcoming winter break, Just Right Reader is donating 5 million books to districts nationwide as part of its winter pilot program. Participating districts will receive Just Right Reader’s personalized Science of Reading Take-Everywhere Literacy Packs™, totaling up to 3,000 books in English and Spanish per district, to support reading achievement and family engagement at home while school is out of session.

“Winter break provides a great time for students to continue to practice—and accelerate—their reading skills at home,” said Sara Rich, founder and CEO of Just Right Reader. “And, with our winter pilot program, districts will be able to give their students and families high-quality literacy resources to continue reading over the winter break. The Science of Reading Take-Everywhere Literacy Packs™ offer easy-to-use resources and fun video lessons available in English and Spanish to help students and families practice phonics skills and experience the joy of reading together.”

As part of the winter pilot program, district leaders applied for one of three program options: General Education – 1st grade, Special Education, or Spanish Bilingual/Dual Language Program. Based on the program selected and district reading data, districts will receive Just Right Reader’s Science of Reading Take-Everywhere Literacy Packs™, which are personalized to the unique phonics needs of each student.

Just Right Reader’s Science of Reading Take-Everywhere Literacy Packs™ come in multiple levels to meet students’ current reading experience. They offer structured phonics practice using texts that students can relate to, as well as several at-home support resources and practice materials that families can access online.

“Just Right Reader’s Science of Reading Take-Everywhere Literacy Packs™ encourage kids to get excited about books in class and then take that excitement home in a backpack to their families and read,” said Tracie Bergman, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction with a literacy focus at Hillsborough County Public Schools in Florida.

Just Right Reader’s Science of Reading Take-Everywhere Literacy Packs™ include:

  • Science of Reading-based literacy resources in English and Spanish to help teach students particular letter-sound relationships
  • Writing resources to reinforce decoding and writing skills
  • QR codes on each book that parents and caregivers can scan to access fun phonics lessons in English and Spanish
  • Access to an online family hub with research-based activities that motivate students to read and keep reading
  • Backpacks for students to take their reading everywhere!
