“When Covid struck the community, Posas brought in nursing students from local colleges and created the area’s only vaccine HUB. As the death toll rapidly rose, her team met the pandemic head-on and vaccinated more than 12,000 people in the community and school, saving countless lives.”
Joann Lopez Posas is an RN, BSN with hospital and prison system experience, as well as experience as a college instructor. She came to RISD five years ago to establish a new school CNA program for the underserved, low-income, high-geriatric area of Texas. The program has certified more than 150 CNA students and graduated numerous more with associate’s degrees through the area’s college dual enrollment program.
Posas navigated all of this while managing the district’s campus nurses, leading medical purchasing duties and establishing a fully functioning multi-bed district teaching clinic through grant writing and fundraising.
