ACE-ED.org and the Kentucky Valley Educational Collaborative (KVEC) will host a live Twitter chat to discuss how the COVID-19 crisis is impacting equity and access in rural schools. Follow the hashtag #RuralKidsMatter on the day of the chat to participate.
When schools are closed, the learning must continue. Unfortunately, according to Pew Research, about a third of rural American homes don’t have broadband and nearly a quarter said getting access to high-speed internet is a major problem in their communities.
In homes that do have access and devices, most aren’t equipped to have numerous family members working online at once — Only 30 percent of rural adults said they own a desktop or laptop computer, a smartphone, a home broadband connection and a tablet.
Where does it all leave children who have abruptly transitioned to distance learning? What are organizations like KVEC doing to provide the tools and resources they need to succeed? What more needs to be done across the country?
